The paper road map was folded to the wrong panel on the passenger seat. We took Route 6 past the cornfields and stopped at a diner for coffee and pie. Two suitcases sat in the back beside a thermos that tipped over at every turn. By dusk, the car was dusty, everyone was stiff, and we still had another hundred miles to go. That is the idea behind it.
