The adjustable wrench sat in the garage drawer until somebody needed it. The screwdriver had a place on the bench, usually covered in a little honest grease. In the 1970s and 1980s, plenty of things got fixed because throwing them out cost money. You learned how things worked, even if the repair involved a few words that were not suitable for company. That is the idea behind it.
