The answering machine stopped halfway through a message in 1996. Grandpa lifted the cover at the dining room table and replaced the loose drive belt. The tape played again, though the voice sounded like it was speaking through a sock. Grandma said the caller needed to speak up next time. Her pager lit up with a message a minute later. That is the idea behind it.
