In 1982, the hardware store kept light bulbs behind the counter. “What did you need?” the clerk asked. “I knew when I parked,” Ruth said. She patted her coat pocket and came up with a parking meter stub. The clerk waited while she stared at the rows of bulbs. That is the idea behind it.
