In 1976, the motel vacancy sign flickered on as the last daylight left the parking lot. You carried a paper cup of ice down the outdoor walkway, past cars with bugs stuck to their grilles. Inside, the TV got two clear channels if nobody touched the antenna. By bedtime, your shoes were under the chair and the next stretch of road could wait until morning. That is the idea behind it.
